When watching the jockey take the horse for practice runs, one should see the length of stride of the horses. Horses that do not have good pace or stride may be healthy but the way they accelerate may be a crucial factor in how the horse can stretch its muscles to gain speed on the track.

Keeping pace also means taking information about the other horses stats too. While one may know more info about ones favorite horse, if they do not know the other horses stats, the bet may end up in a stalemate or loss.
